Every year, I am able to go on a three-day silent retreat. It is, indeed, a highlight of my year. My time to attend always comes at the end of my kids’ summer vacation, which is just perfect. I look forward each year to getting some time away from the busyness that a summer is not supposed to be and time to reset my spiritual life as the school year gets underway. At this particular retreat, there was a lot of stuff going on. It was a busy summer with the boys, my dad was struggling with a severe neurological disorder that was weighing heavily on me, and I was helping my parents move thirty years of stuff out of their two-story home to a ranch. My mind was spinning. One morning as I was trying to settle my mind walking the stations of the cross, I came across the crucifixion. On this hot August day when all the flowers seemed to have died, there was one yellow flower still standing at the station.
This drawing came out of this experience. Amongst all the suffering that Jesus endured in his Passion and crucifixion, he gave us the ultimate gift. The Sacred Heart of Jesus shows us both the divine and human love that Jesus has for both his father and for us. Jesus led a life in which he was willing to lay down for us in his crucifixion.
I sketched this image this day and later made it into the painting, may it be a reminder to you of Jesus’ burning love and may it encourage you to live your life with Him in the light.
