I first created a painting of a peacock a few years back as a request for my sweet mom. Before I begin any painting, I like to research and find different references that I use for my sketches.  During the process, I really started noticing peacocks and became infatuated with them.  However, at this time I had no idea the relation of peacocks to the Catholic Church.  It is when I learned of this that I truly became fascinated with this incredible bird.  In early Christian art, peacocks have commonly appeared as a symbol of the Resurrection as the flesh of the peacock never decays even after it dies.

Through my recent research, however, I found an article by Fr. John Bartunek that I found to be fascinating.  He states the following, “During the normal activities of a normal day, peacocks are fairly normal looking animals. And yet, all the while they are pecking and clucking like your average fowl, a hidden splendor lies underneath. When they spread their tail-feathers, this magnificence shines forth, revealing their true beauty. The symbolism here is clear. When you see a Christian walking along the street, you can’t tell the difference between him and someone who has never been baptized. From all external appearances, they are both just human beings making their way through the hustle and bustle of daily life. And yet, underneath that ordinary appearance, the Christian soul enjoys a hidden splendor through the transforming power of God’s grace.”

It is my hope as one views this painting, that they are reminded of the true beauty and the many gifts that you have been given from God: your hidden splendor.
